The disability activist and scholar, Paul K. Longmore, who was unable to use his hands as a result of having polio as a child, passed away earlier this month on August 9th due to natural causes.

Longmore spent ten years writing a book by punching a keyboard with a pen he held in his mouth. When “The Invention of George Washington” was finished in 1988, Longmore burnt a copy of it in front of a federal building in downtown L.A. to draw attention to “a campaign to reform Social Security policies that discourage disabled professionals from working”.

Longmore soon became a leading activist for people with disabilities and scholar in disability studies. Longmore also taught for many years at San Fransisco State where he helped establish disability studies as an academic field of research and study.

If you or someone you know needs to file for long-term disability benefits, contact the Indiana long-term disability litigation attorneys of Hankey Law Office P.C. at 800-520-3633 to learn more about your rights.

Vehicle Production Group, based in Miami, Florida, has built a vehicle from the ground up to make wheel chair access easier. Production of the vehicle, called MV-1 standing for first mobility vehicle, will start in Mishawaka, Indiana later this year.

CEO of VPG Dave Schembri stated, “This is the first vehicle that’s been built from the ground up for wheelchair accessibility and the only vehicle that’s factory-produced that meets the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act”.

Approximately 54 million Americans have some form of disability, including 4 million who are wheelchair dependent.

Normally, wheelchair dependent people have to have a ramp attached to a vehicle in order to get into the car.

In the 2010 ADA in Your Community poll, 835 people ranked the implementation of the Americans with Disabilities Act in communities across Indiana. The survey participants included people with disabilities, their family members and advocates.

The ADA-Indiana, the Governor’s Council for People with Disabilities, Indiana Protection and Advocacy Services, and the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community worked together to conduct the survey, analyze the results, and prepare a report card.

The results of the survey showed that participants believe some of the biggest issues for ADA implementation in Indiana include making more employment opportunities available, providing accessible transportation, educating businesses and government officials about the ADA, and providing accommodations for employment. Overall, Indiana received a grade of a ‘C’ for the report card.

Today, the U.S. Department of Labor launched an evaluation effort to review the Disability Program Navigator Initiative called “Use of One-Stops by Social Security Disability Beneficiaries in Four States Implementing Disability Program Navigator Initiative”.

The evaluation is to determine if the public workforce system, specifically the One-Stop Career Center system, is helping people receiving Social Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income to find jobs. The study is being held in Iowa, Maryland, Colorado, and Oregon using data from 2002 to 2007.

The Assistant Secretary of Labor for Employment and Training Jane Oates stated, “The public workforce investment system’s role in serving people with disabilities, and reducing unemployment and underemployment of people with disabilities, is critically important. For the first time, we have data clearly documenting that thousands of Social Security disability beneficiaries are seeking and receiving services from One-Stop Career Centers in four states”.
