Obesity interpreted as disability under ADA

Over the past decades, obesity has become a rapidly-growing problem in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 30% of this country’s adults are considered obese.

People who are coping with obesity have difficulty with everyday tasks that everyone else takes for granted. Something as simple as walking a short distance can become an arduous task for someone suffering from obesity. Recently, there has been an increased push to recognize obesity as a disability under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Under this law, employers are required to make reasonable accommodations for people who have disabilities. Accommodations can be as simple as a closer parking spot.
