Veterans most compensated for diabetes

According to the Veterans Administration records, ahead of hearing loss, wounds, and post-traumatic stress disorder, diabetes is the most compensated disability among veterans. Officials estimate that Vietnam veterans with diabetes receive around $850 million a year.

Disability benefits awarded for diabetes are a result of the use of Agent Orange in the Vietnam War. In 1991, as a result of suspicions that Agent Orange could cause diabetes, Congress created a system to automatically reward benefits to Vietnam veterans who suffer any ailments associated with the agent. Other ailments include prostate cancer, lung cancer, Hodgkin’s disease and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

“It is our solemn responsibility to help veterans with disabilities suffered in their service to our country…That responsibility also requires us to make sure limited resources are available for those who truly need and are entitled to them,” stated Senator Daniel Akaka in reference to the VA’s recent announcement about diabetes.
